This vitamin, widely known as cobalamin or cyanocobalamin, is contained in many foods, like dairy, fish, and meat. It is synthesized by the micro-flora of the intestine and can be produced artificially in the laboratory.

Useful Properties

Vitamin B12 is essential for the proper work and development of the blood cells, nerves, brains, and other body organs. It takes part in the synthesis of amino-acids, process of hematogenesis, metabolism of fats and carbohydrates, and formation of DNA molecules.

Cyanocobalamin is used for preventing and treating pernicious anemia, caused by deficiency of this vitamin.

It is also efficient in curing Alzheimer’s disease, slowing aging, memory loss, boosting energy levels, lowering homocysteine, mental disorders, allergies, AIDS, vitiligo, cancers, depression, skin infections, sleep disorders, multiple sclerosis, AMD, male infertility, swollen tendons, inflammatory bowel disease, eczema, Lyme disease, psoriasis, heart disease, asthma, and many other health conditions.

It can be taken by mouth, through the nose or in a shot. Sometimes it is applied to the skin.

Vitamin B12 Deficiency

Deficiency in cyanocobalamin can be inherited. In this case it is called Imerslund-Grasbeck disease. Lack of vitamin B12 can be also caused by a strict vegetarian diet, chronic alcoholism, and some diseases. Cobalamin deficiency often leads to asthenia, lack of appetite, dizziness, rapid fatigability, tachycardia, irritability, and tongue tingling.

Vitamin B12 Side Effects

It is safe for adults and children when taken in adequate amounts.

Vitamin B12 Absorption

In the stomach cyanocobalamin is combined with mucoprotein, forming complex protein which is easily absorbed in the intestine.

Recommendations and Precautions

Pregnant and breast-feeding women, athletes, people over 50 years, and persons having vitamin B12 deficiency need more cyanocobalamin.

You should not take it if you suffer from megaloblastic anemia, Leber’s disease, or allergy to cobalamin or cobalt.
