Master Cleanse Diet

The Master Cleanse (also called The Juice Fast) is a popular diet, which has been known since the early years of the 1940s. Many people state that it is the most efficient program of its kind. Stanley Burroughs, who wrote “The Master Cleanser” book, assures that the diet has showed “eliminating and building ability”.

How Does It Work?

This program is a liquid detox1 and weight loss diet. It provides a sufficient amount of nutrients and calories, allowing your digestive system2 to rest and your body to cleanse and heal in a natural way.

The Master Cleanse Diet is very simple. You just have to make lemon juice and water with cayenne pepper and maple syrup, and drink it every time when you feel hungry (at least twelve glasses a day). You should also take a laxative when you wake up and when you go to bed.

The program consists of the three main parts.

  • Ease-In: This phase lasts three days and helps to remove various processed products from the diet. This step is not very important and many people just skip it beginning directly with the next one. But if you are going to follow the diet for the first time, you should better begin with it.
  • The Lemonade Diet: During these ten-fourteen days you will not eat digestible food. The special lemonade will be your only nourishment. You will also have to take either salt water flush or nightly laxatives in order to stimulate the process, which the author calls “The Daily Detox Bowel Movement”. This phase will help you to flush out toxins and lose excessive weight very fast.
  • Ease-Out: This part continues three days. You will gradually return to your regular eating habits. Do not begin to eat too soon, because you may experience nausea and other health problems. So you should not undervalue the importance of this phase.

These phases are explained particularly in the article about the Master Cleanse Diet plan. You should follow all the directions very cautiously.

What Are the Benefits?

Most probably, you will lose weight with the help of this program because you will get too few calories. The authors of the diet assure that you will detox your body and feel much healthier.

Are There Any Health Risks?

When you follow the Master Cleanse, you may experience some of the following side effects:

  • Bad breath, increased ear wax, mucus and tooth plaque happen because extra toxins are released through your tongue.
  • Nausea is a consequence of drinking the Salt Water Flush.
  • White tongue is a common side effect of all cleansing diets. Once the program is finished, the tongue will become pink again.
  • Dizziness may happen if you do not drink the lemonade enough.
  • Diarrhea is a result of getting much vitamin C from you lemonade.

All these side effects are related to the process of cleansing your body and they are not too awful though some of them are really unpleasant.

Most dieters also have psychological and emotional problems while following the program. They can be irritable and impatient.

What Foods Should Be Eaten?

During the Master Cleanse Diet you will drink the special lemonade cooked by mixing together fresh lemon juice, cayenne pepper, rich maple syrup, and pure water. It will be your only source of energy. You should drink at least six glasses per day, though beginners should better start from twelve glasses.

Your body must be kept hydrated. So drink much pure water too.

For stimulating bowel movements, you will have to prepare the Salt Water Flush (sea salt and water) or buy herbal laxatives.

What Foods Should Be Avoided?

In fact, during the Master Cleanse Diet you just drink the lemonade and do not eat any solid foods. You may not drink coffee and alcohol, use drugs or smoke cigarettes.

Bottom Line

Dietitians warn that getting very few calories may be dangerous for your body. You will lose not only fat but also water, muscles and even bone tissue. Moreover, you will most likely regain the lost weight when you return to your regular diet.

There is no scientifically proved evidence of weight loss benefits of detoxifying programs, and doctors say that you do not need to purify your body if your liver works properly.

Master Cleanse Diet Plan

The Master Cleanse Diet consists of three main phases: Ease-In, The Lemonade Diet, and Ease-Out.

Ease-In

This step helps to start the program. It is not very important and many dieters skip it beginning directly with the next one, but if you go on the Master Cleanse for the first time, you should better prepare your body and mind for getting much fewer calories.

First of all, buy all the necessary ingredients and tools. Here is the list:

  • Sea salt
  • Lemons
  • Maple syrup
  • Cayenne pepper
  • Pure water
  • Herbal teas (no caffeine)
  • Laxatives
  • Teaspoon measures
  • A juicer

The Ease-In phase lasts three days:

  1. During the first one you will eat live organic foods. Remove meat, dairy, and processed products from the diet. Replace them with vegetables and fruits, but do not eat too much.
  2. You will prepare the body for liquid food. Make vegetable and fruit juices and smoothies. Broths and soups are allowed too.
  3. Make two liters of orange juice. Mix it with water to taste. Drink it during the day.

By the end of the third day your body will be ready for the next part of the Master Cleanse Diet.

The Lemonade Diet

During this phase you will cook and drink the Master Cleanse Lemonade and flush out toxins of the body. As you will not eat solid food, you will have to stimulate bowel movements with the help of the Salt Water Flush or nightly laxatives.

You will prepare the lemonade every day soon after waking up. You should drink it right after it is made. Drink six – twelve glasses per day.

You should also drink much pure water in order to stay hydrated.

The process of detoxification happens through daily bowel movements. You must take a bedtime laxative every day and you can have it in the morning too. Drinking the Salt Water Flush is optional.

Ease-Out

This phase is very important and it is not recommended to skip it. You should not start eating too soon, as you can have nausea, constipation or some other health problems.

The process lasts three days. During the first one you will drink two liters of orange juice. On the second day you can start drinking vegetable and fruit juices or eat broths and soups. On the last day of the phase eat live foods, avoiding meat, dairy, and processed products.

Living after the Diet

When you finish your Master Cleanse Diet, you should start eating healthy. The author of the program also recommends taking probiotics for some time. They will help to fill your body up again with the good bacteria.

  1. Detox (or detoxification) is the process of purifying the body of toxic substances.
  2. Digestive system is the body’s organs digesting the food that you eat.
